MSU policy for scooters, bikes and other personal transportation
The use of scooters, bikes and other personal transportation devices such as skateboards and one-wheels is subject to guidelines outlined in . As pedestrian and vehicular conflicts with scooters and bikes have increased this academic year and with several new complaints being made about their use since we returned for the spring semester, please be reminded of the following guidelines:
- Crosswalks are for pedestrian use only. Scooters, bikes, and other personal transportation devices, except those used for persons with disabilities, are NOT to be ridden through crosswalks. They must be dismounted and walked through crosswalks.
- Scooters, bikes, and other personal transportation devices, except those used for persons with disabilities, are prohibited from being ridden in locations where pedestrians are present鈥攖his includes sidewalks and plazas.
- Scooters, bikes and other personal transportation devices should be ridden in bike lanes within the roadway, in the travel lanes marked for shared use with vehicles, or in multi-use paths that are signed for bike use. When in doubt, they should always be in the roadway, behaving as a vehicle.
- Scooters, bikes and other personal transportation devices, except those used for persons with disabilities, are not permitted in campus buildings.
- Scooters, bikes and other personal transportation devices, except those used for persons with disabilities, must be parked in designated locations, including bike racks and dismount zones found around campus. They cannot be parked next to campus buildings and doors or propped up on trees or light poles, for example, and should always be secured by a lock.
We expect to increase the enforcement of these guidelines. Safety is our No. 1 concern. There have been several serious accidents with injuries where bikers or scooter riders have been improperly operating these devices, as well as instances where injuries have occurred to pedestrians who have been hit by riders.
Please be considerate of all those moving around campus and prioritize your safety and that of your fellow MSU community members with your actions.
