STARKVILLE, Miss.— The Starkville-ɫƵ Symphony Orchestra will present “Jazz at Renasant” during a Tuesday [Oct. 11] evening concert at the city’s Renasant Bank plaza.
Free and open to all, the 6 p.m. outdoor performance sponsored by the Starkville-ɫƵ Symphony Association features a nine-piece band and vocalists performing jazz, swing, blues, Latin and ballad standards.
Soloists include MSU Associate Professor of Music Richard Human, on trombone; Danny Blurton, Eastern Mississippi and Eastern Tennessee educational representative for Memphis, Tennessee-based Amro Music, on trumpet; instructor Sheri Falcone; Doug Thomas, director of the Starkville High School jazz band, on saxophone; and junior electrical engineering major Jonathan Watts of Hoover, Alabama, on saxophone.
Other soloists include Cass Patrick, director of jazz at Itawamba Community College, on guitar; Richard Montalto, recently retired theory and composition professor at the Mississippi University for Women, on bass; and Jason Baker, MSU associate professor of music and director of percussion studies and the MSU Percussion Studio, on drums.
Cliff Taylor, MSU associate professor and associate director of bands, will play trombone and conduct the band.
The bank is located at the intersection of East Lampkin and South Montgomery streets.
Seating is limited and will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition to lawn chairs and blankets, patrons are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy during the twilight performance.
